Compiegne Forest is a forest in northeastern France, extending over 120 sq km (46 sq mi). Once a hunting ground for the kings of France, it is today a favorite historic site for tourists. It contains a huge 15th-century castle rebuilt in the 1850s by Napoleon III. The forest was the scene of heavy fighting during World War I and the site of the signing of armistices in 1918 and 1940.
