Orchidaceae or Orchid family is the largest family of the flowering plants. It is considered to contain 22.000 species but, because of the toxicology and the risk if they are studed, it is possible to contain over 25.000. Orchidaceae are cosmopolitan, occurring in almost every habitat, but not deserts and glaciers. One orchid genus, Vanilla, is commercially important, used as a foodstuff flavouring.
